From the recording Moon Rocks
Lyrics
When I was Christopher
I applied to take a rocket ship to another planet
To me the prospect held great appeal
When I was Christopher
After rigorous testing, pokes and prods, and plenty of patience
I was cleared to join the colony
When I was Christopher
I said farewell to all that I had ever known
The Earth looked tiny from my space window
When I was Christopher
But a hop skip and a jump and soon I found myself
One small step for man and there I was
When I was Christopher
I was greeted with the properness of a diplomat
Tea and cookies made me feel at ease
When I was Christopher
To the second floor fourth door on the right and there was my room
My name was even written on the door
When I was Christopher
After 40 winks I joined them at the breakfast table
Then put on my bibs and prepared to work
When I was Christopher
We toiled under the Milky Way efficiently
Silence followed suit in evening time
I was being shown a whole new way of being
Like the eyes I had before were never even seeing
I tell you it was a strange phenomenon
On Earth I had a standard that was par excellence
But there sans pretense I saw I lacked elegance
They set the bar as high as it could go
When I was Christopher
Although I fancied I would stay there evermore
I couldn't breathe the air so rarefied
When I was Christopher
So I spoke to the General told him in general
I had several reasons why I would be temporal there
When I was Christopher
He was imperturbable vouchsafed no reply at first
Then said, "There's a ship at the hour of noon."
When I was Christopher
As I packed my bags and hopped upon the rocket ship
The General appeared from around the door.
He said,
"Son don't you worry you were only meant to glimpse
The planet that we live on in time it will make sense
Take these Moon Rocks for remembrance
To stay or leave this planet doesn't really matter
You'll achieve your destiny by climbing Jacob's ladder"
The rocket ship headed back for planet Earth
When I was Christopher
Coming back to Earth was a little bit harder than I thought
I had to dig myself from a bottomless pit
When I was Christopher
But I picked myself up put my boots upon the path
And turned those Moon Rocks into stepping stones.
